Am currently residing in Vietnam, accompanying Silas on an overseas attachment. He started his attachment in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in Oct 2008.
First impression of HCMC? A scene you would see in Singapore some 20, 30 years ago...a mix of shops selling high-end products to ramshackle shops selling silk, souvenirs, bags, baskets, books, etc. Now, I fully understood and appreciate the painstaking effort by Singapore government in her urban planning. The streets were teeming with sidewalk cafes, restaurants, massage parlours, coffee houses, centuries-old pagodas, skyscrapers, markets and malls.
Not forgetting the chaotic mess of traffic-clogged roads with lotsa motorbikes, an astonishing figure of 10 over million in the entire Vietnam and still counting. Crossing the road was like Mission Impossible, however, once you get the hang of it, it's not that difficult afterall. (Tip: Cross when there's no big vehicles, dun worry, motorbikes will steer clear of you. I'm doubtful if you will ever cross the road if you were to wait till all the motorbikes are cleared! =p)
Chaotic traffic in HCMC
All in all, I've been travelling to and fro Singapore/HCMC for about 6 times before we finally decided that we should take a bigger step forward. That's when I decided that I should take no-pay leave to give him my fullest support in this overseas land.
On that faithful day (29 June), the day when I bade goodbye to Singapore, at least for a good 3 months or even longer...I called Mum using the free phone at the waiting lounge...I thought I would be strong...Uncontrollably, tears trickled down my face (so pai seh... :O) Trying to avoid any possible attention, I quickly wiped away my 'watered' face. Darling to the rescue...he sayang me and patted me, even without saying a word (action speaks louder than words). The immense comfort i felt was much desired...darling, thank you...and making me even more assured of my decision!
That's all for now...coming up....Our new apartment in Vung Tau, a 120-km drive away or a 90-min ferry ride from the bustling HCMC. (",)
